Geneva startup Gmelius took part this summer in the Y Combinator acceleration program in Mountain View, a first for a Swiss startup. Startupticker.ch had the opportunity to ask a few questions to its CEO, Florian Bersier to learn more about this experience and how it will impact its development.

When did Y Combinator acceleration program start for Gmelius? What were your expectations?

The Y Combinator program took place this summer from June through August in Mountain View, California. Our expectations were met with our experience. We plan to use the YC resources and network to further develop our product fit and expand our presence in the US, where we currently have more than 60% of our market.

How did Gmelius convince the Y Combinator jury?

We knew Gmelius was well positioned on the market and we were able to convince the jury by explaining the problem that our solution is solving. Teams in professional work environments are suffering from disconnected communications, dispersed data, and an overload of tools promising to help. Gmelius is able to solve those problems in a unique solution that lives within their Gmail inbox. Email is where most work starts for companies and Gmelius allows them to finish it there. It was important for the Y Combinator jury to see that Gmelius has the potential to reach a 1 Billion dollar valuation.

Any recommendations for Swiss startups wishing to apply like you in the future?

Start with a pressing problem that users are suffering from and present a unique solution that is currently not on the market. If the total addressable market of those suffering is big enough, Y Combinator will definitely consider their entrance.

How much did the Y Combinator invest in Gmelius? Are the conditions the same for all the companies selected?

Y Combinator's investment conditions are standard for all companies: $150,000 for 7%.

What are the next steps for your company?

The next steps for our company are to continue developing our product-market-fit. We plan to continue onboarding larger organizations with multi-department teams. This falls in-line with our plans to reinvent the way that companies are communicating and collaborating.

How many people do you employ today in Geneva?

We currently employ 18 people and planning to grow to 25 by the end of the year.
