It was a good year for the Swiss start-up scene in 2017 and there is every chance that 2018 will be as good. Currently, applications are open for several important awards.

Dear reader

January is the month for reviews. ETH Zurich has just published its spin-off statistics for 2017, in which 25 start-ups emerged. It is worth noting that more and more start-ups are being founded in the field of digitalisation. The start-up climate is good – not only for high-tech companies, but also in general. In 2017, more companies were registered in the commercial register than ever before. The review in the report The State of European Tech 2017 is also very interesting. The 150-page analysis paints a differentiated picture of the European tech scene and contains encouraging results for Switzerland.

We will publish our annual review of venture capital investment in Swiss start-ups at the end of January. You can already pre-order the magazine and register for the brunches in Zurich on 30 January and in Lausanne on 31 January.

Innosuisse, the successor organisation of the CTI, was launched on 1 January; our article (in German and French) gives an overview of the new organisation. Incidentally, Innosuisse, together with the SNSF, has started a further call for projects for the BRIDGE Discovery funding programme. Our article on the development of a high-precision, sensor-based robot for spinal surgery illustrates what such a project looks like in practice.

In addition, the application deadlines for a number of important start-up competitions are running. You have until 8 January to sign up for venture leaders Technology and win a trip to Silicon Valley. This is also the deadline for the WA de Vigier Foundation awards, in which five start-ups can each win CHF 100,000 francs and access to a first-class network. There is still time to apply for the eastern Switzerland award Startfeld Diamant – until 15 January.

The semi-finalists have already been confirmed for the Pionierpreis. The list includes 11 very interesting and very different start-ups. Incidentally, we mentioned recently Twentygreen, the winner of last year’s Pionierpreis, in another article. The start-up is one of the nine companies at Technopark Lucerne that attracted investors last year. In total, the Technopark Lucerne companies received more than CHF8 million.

A good start to the new year to everyone.
