Who will win the Swiss Medtech Award 2019?

The Swiss Medtech Award – which is organized by the Swiss medical technology association and Innosuisse – is presented to outstanding achievements in the medical technology industry. The award particularly recognizes products or solutions that demonstrate clear patient benefit.

The Swiss Medtech Award committee has recently nominated three finalists:

• Bernese CAScination developed a planning tool for surgery on the ear OTOPLAN as well as the robotic ear microsurgery platform HEARO. The HEARO procedure has been successfully executed on patients at Inselspital. Many of CAScination’s products are used in clinics all over Europe, the United States and most recently also in India.

• The EPFL spin-off GTX medical’s spinal cord implant delivers specific electric stimulation for patients with a spinal cord injury during training in order to augment and accelerate functional recovery. In November 2018 preliminary clinical results, published in Nature, confirmed a series of significant scientific breakthroughs in paralyzed patients. The Dutch government also saw great potential and granted the Swiss startup with an office in Eindhoven a loan of €10m.

• Sequana Medical, formerly headquartered in Zurich relocated its headquarters to Ghent in Belgium late last year, following a €8.5m investment from leading Belgian investors. In April 2019, a successful IPO on Euronext Brussels followed this February. The Swiss-Belgian startup developed a so-called alfapump system for malignant ascites patients.

The winner of the Swiss Medtech Award will be honored at the end of the Swiss Medtech Day on June 6th at the Kurhaus in Berne. The winner will receive a prize of 50’000 Swiss francs, which is donated by Lichtsteiner Stiftung, Straumann group and Ypsomed.
