In 2020, MacGyverWorld, a MacGyver-themed VR escape room leveraging the 3D capture technology developed by the EPFL spinoff Imverse will be opened. The technology will enable scanning of participants before they enter as well as multi-player interaction.

Imverse specializes in the development of 3D technology for XR (VR/AR/MR) and Location-Based Entertainment (LBE). The startup’s unique 'real-time capturing & rendering system' enables content creation studios to integrate holograms of the players in their mixed reality experiences. Using Imverse technology, studios can create live-action multiplayer games in which the player is the main protagonist of the story. Also, multiple players are able to interact with each other and the surrounding virtual environment using their own captured bodies without a controller.

Imverse is now on the verge of bringing its technology to the LBE market through virtual reality escape rooms. To achieve this, the startup has joined forces with film producers Lee David Zlotoff, creator of MacGyver and Brett Leonard the director of “Lawnmover Man” to launch a MacGyver-themed VR escape room. Produced by Mark Rickard from Leonard’s Studio Lightship outlet, MacGyverWorld, is expected to debut in 2020.

As revealed by Variety, the experience room leverage Imverse’s 3D capture technology, which scans participants before they enter MacGyverWorld. “When you look at your friends, you can see their holograms,” said Javier Bello Ruiz, CEO and co-founder of Imverse, in an interview with Variety. “In virtual reality, you need to have a presence.”

According to Mark Rickard MacGyver, the combination of location-based VR with the escape room concept is a great franchise and an easy fit. MacGyver’s character would help to shape people’s expectations as it is always him in an outrageous, difficult situation. As such, coaching people will not be required.

As part of the strategy, Imverse plans to open a flagship location next year, and then license its content as well as technology to VR centre operators.
