For almost 20 years, the experts at Red Herring have been indentifying the 100 most promising start-ups on three continents. And every year young Swiss high-tech companies appear on the Top 100 Europe. This year is no different, with six firms on the list: one company is from the cleantech industry, the other five are working in the fields of media, internet and software.

Switzerland enjoys a high international reputation as an ICT location, one demonstrated by the acquisition of Netbreeze by Microsoft. “Netbreeze technology is unique in the way it combines modern methods from Natural Language Processing (NLP), data mining and semantic text analysis,” raved Bob Stutz, corporate vice president of Microsoft Dynamics.

Much potential still appears to be in the business model of SuitArt, founded in 2009. The investor André Mäder – formerly of Charles Vögele and Hugo Boss – has increased his commitment to the manufacture of tailor-made suits, and the money raised will go to ensure a rapid international expansion

Speaking of international expansion, the crowd-funding platform wemakeit has expanded its business activities in Germany, with the launch of the first six projects last week.

After some initial scepticism, crowdfunding really appears to have established itself – and not just in the creative industries, but also in traditional sectors such as the watch industry. The sector insider Thomas Steinmann has generated about CHF1.5 million for the restart of DuBois et Fils, the oldest watch factory in Switzerland.

The newsletter will not be published next week, as it is the Easter holidays. The next edition will appear in your mailbox on 5 April. However, the events calendar is well filled over Easter week: on 26 March, the 40th Swiss Venture Day will take place, and the following day Rollfeld will run a workshop on “Media work for start-ups”.Among the speakers will be startupticker’s Stefan Kyora.

Best wishes for the Easter holidays
