Unit load device

Nexxiot has entered a partnership with Unilode Aviation Solutions to digitize the entire fleet of more than 100'000 Unilode loading devices within the next 18 month. The data will then be processed, analyzed and made available by Nexxiot for Unilode.

The Zurich-based Nexxiot is a pioneer in the development and delivery of digital supply chain management solutions. The startup developed smart sensors and software that facilitate the tracking and monitoring of shipments.

In September 2018, Uniload Aviation Solutions which owns and manages the world’s largest outsourced fleet of approximately 125,000 unit load devices (ULDs) for use in the aviation industry started trials of Nexxiot solutions in its devices. Following the successful trials, Unilode has now signed a strategic partnership with Nexxiot too further their collaboration.

By the beginning of 2021, all ULDs supported by Unilode will be fitted with Bluetooth sensors. The data will be processed, analysed and made available by Nexxiot for Unilode. This enables, for the first time anywhere in the world, continuous, automated tracking of ULDs both on the ground and in the air. Currently, around 10,000 ULDs are already equipped with the corresponding Bluetooth technology and can be activated digitally by Nexxiot.

Neutral user interface
In addition, Nexxiot has developed and currently maintains a neutral user interface for Unilode where customers can view the data of their ULDs and use various services such as ULD location, temperature-, shock-, light- and humidity measurement as well as inflight tracking. Based on the new partnership, the company will be able to offer spot leasing for load carriers in the future. The pooling of ULDs will also be simplified.

The partnership has also opened new avenues for Nexxiot to work independently on its own sensors for the first time. The startup will integrate external data on its platform.

“The strategic partnership with Unilode is an important step for us in scaling our business model. For the first time, we are now developing solutions to digitize the air freight market and make the handling of ULDs transparent worldwide. We achieve this by combining freight and movement data. Our extensive experience in the rail segment has helped us to master the problems in the air freight industry,” says Helmut Kaspers, Nexxiot CEO

„Working with Nexxiot gives us a new perspective on our global fleet. We want to pass on the transparency we have gained by offering new services that are fully tailored to the needs of our customers,” says Benoît Dumont, CEO of Unilode Aviation Solutions.
