Six startups have been selected to join the Phase II of the Swiss Business Incubation Centre (BIC) of CERN Technologies entrepreneurship program. Four of them stem from Switzerland with solutions spanning from space to logistics and life sciences.

The entrepreneurship program of the Swiss Business Incubation Centre (BIC) of CERN Technologies was launched in 2018 to provide high-tech startups access to accelerator technology expertise and encourage the industry to use the solutions developed at research centers such as CERN and the Paul Scherrer Institute PSI in Switzerland.

In the first edition of the Swiss Business Incubation Centre (BIC) of CERN Technologies entrepreneurship program, out of 30 applicants, six candidates were selected for Phase II, and the winner was the Geneva-based company SecuraXis. Securaxis joined the program to develop acoustic sensors for smart cities using CERN’s modular control and monitoring system “C2MON”.

This year, out of over 20 submitted entries for the 2019 edition, CERN and PARK INNOVAARE nominated again six startups to proceed to Phase II. The startups were selected to proceed based on their IP requirements and market potential which were evaluated in Phase I. Four startups are based in Switzerland while the other two come from abroad. They include:

Arc Power (Switzerland) founded by engineers with several years of experience is building radiation-hardened custom power management and distribution solutions for space applications.

Daphne Technology (Switzerland) is dedicated to improving the ecological footprint of cargo shipping by retrofitting current diesel engines on ships. The startup is developing a catalyst-free scrubber technology to reduce air emissions.

TERAPET (Switzerland) is dedicated to improving the monitoring of dose delivery in proton therapy treatment.

BAQ (Suisse) strives to improve air quality by carefully monitoring cancerogenic gas concentration.

Dronhub Innovations (Poland) is developing a drone-based patrolling and surveillance system.

JoS QUANTUM (Germany) - specializes in hardware-agnostic software and quantum algorithms for finance, insurance, and energy.

During the next six weeks, the candidates will draft a comprehensive business plan to pitch to an independent Selection Committee. The most outstanding solution will be honored for winning the 2019 Swiss BIC of CERN Technologies Prize, which includes:

  • CHF 50’000 Seed Money
  • beneficial access to CERN’s IP and know-how
  • further business and technical support from FHNW and PSI
  • Membership at PARK INNOVAARE, Villigen
