The Future Internet Games Contest was looking for experimental pervasive games that enable large groups of people to play together in the real world. The Award went to Ateo, a young start-up from Zurich, for its game lasAR.

The Future Internet Games Contest is supported by associated partners in affiliation with Abertay University. The Future Internet Games Contest comprises major European and global companies and research centres, who have joined their skills in the Future Internet (FI) content initiative to drive innovation at the crossroads of content, media, networks and creativity. This initiative aims at developing and experimenting across Europe cutting edge ICT platforms devoted to applications and services in the areas of social connected TV, smart city services, and pervasive games.

The partnership between Abertay University and FI Content is to focus on the Pervasive games platform, which demonstrates a strong mix of real life and Internet experience in a playful way and shows advances in 3D or virtual world environments in a way that becomes immersive and “real”.

The platform focuses on multiplayer mobile gaming that leverages the future Internet technology in order to enable large groups of users to participate in innovative mobile gameplay experiences.

A central theme of this new social gaming platform is moving beyond the traditional paradigm in which a user is fixed in front of a console or display. In this way, the game becomes an augmented version of the real world that delivers a more compelling experience than traditional console games or the simplistic social games that dominate today’s market.

The winner of the award was announced DareProtoPlay in Dundee and went to lasAR, a game developed by Swiss start-up Ateo. In a blog post the Ateo team describes the game: “In lasAR you can cut a melon in Augmented Reality space. The goal is to achieve even sized parts. The game is a prototype for this AR mechanic, which is simple, easy to understand and most importantly only possible in AR, as you can adjust the cutting angle by looking at the object in 3D space. It could be used in product advertising. We will share “lasAR” on Google Play during the next weeks.”

Ateo is a young company from Zurich, founded by two game designers in 2013. The startup concepts, develops and deploys innovative applications and games using latest trends in wearable technology, Virtual Reality headsets and Augmented Reality.
